Advanced Improv

Keep Working! Keep Growing! Keep Playing!

This Advanced Improv Class is for improv students who have completed the curriculum at one of Austin’s reputable improv schools (or similar schools in different cities) and would like to continue developing and growing as improvisers.

After completing an improv school, many advanced performers find themselves stuck in a rut, struggling to deepen their skills and push their creative boundaries. Without the right guidance, it’s easy to plateau and feel frustrated with limited growth opportunities.

This lack of continued advanced training can stunt your development as a performer and leave you feeling uninspired. Without continued practice and guidance, your improv skills can plateau, leaving you frustrated and unsure how to push your creativity and performance to the next level. You may feel isolated or lacking the right community to collaborate with other advanced performers.

This 8-week advanced improv class is specifically designed for experienced improv students who want to deepen their craft. This course provides focused training, complex scene work, and opportunities for dynamic collaboration, helping you grow as a confident and versatile performer. With expert instruction and a supportive environment, you’ll continue to expand your skills and explore new dimensions of improvisation to keep your passion alive and thriving.

– For ages 40 & Older
– This class is limited to 12 students

TOM BOOKER is a former college mascot who started studying improvisation in 1986 at The Second City Training Center in Chicago before studying with legendary improv guru Del Close at ImprovOlympic (iO) where he performed with the infamous house troupe, Blue Velveeta.

He is also a founding member of Chicago’s Annoyance Theatre where, among other things, he performed in their Off-Broadway production of The Real Live Brady Bunch at the world famous Village Gate Theater and at the Westwood Playhouse in Los Angeles.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1991, Tom formed Theatre-A-Go-Go! with Laura Hall, the musical director from Whose Line Is It Anyway? He eventually started teaching improv and sketch writing at The Second City Training Center in Los Angeles. Tom also co-wrote and co-directed (with producing partner Jon Kean) the feature film Kill The Man starring Luke Wilson, which premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Tom has appeared in several television shows, a few movies and nearly a hundred commercials.

From 2001 to 2007 Tom taught Improv Classes, Sketch Writing Classes and Commercia Audition Workshops at The Second City Training Center.

In 2007, Tom Booker from Los Angeles to Austin and opened The Institution Theater, a theater and improv school in South Austion which remained open until March 2020. (Thanks, COVID!)
